Books, Books, Books! 2 pm Via Zoom

Books, Books, Books!

Wednesday, October 7 at 2 pm

Via Zoom

Join Village members for a roundup of some interesting books they’d like to share. The first in an occasional series, this is not a traditional book discussion. You don’t have to have read any of the books, but if you have read one of them, please feel free to add your comments after the reviewer talks. You may also ask questions – but don’t ask us to give away the ending!

Featured books:

Kathy Regele will talk about There, There by Tommy Orange (the 2019 One Book, One Philadelphia selection). This first novel is fierce, angry, funny, and heartbreaking. It is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen – describing the plight of the Native American in the city, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide.

Kathi DiMenna will talk about
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. A novel about the Richardson family of Shaker Heights, Ohio, where their seemingly perfectly planned life is disrupted by the mother-daughter pair of Mia and Pearl Warren. This #1 New York Times Bestseller is now the basis for an Emmy-nominated mini-series.

Mary Flournoy will talk about The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migrations by Isabel Wilkerson. By combining history and statistics with biographies of three people, Wilkerson created a gripping account of the migrations of African Americans from the South to the Midwest, Northeast, and West from approximately 1915 to 1970.

We hope that you may want to read some of the books – and that you may want to participate in future Zooms of Books, Books, Books! by talking about a favorite book.  Contact Kathi DiMenna at kadimenna@aol.com if you’d like to recommend a book and talk about it.

Please register in advance so we can email you the Zoom link. Register online, or call 267-444-4507 (M-F, 9-6). If this is your first Zoom event, don’t worry. We’ll send you all the information you need before the meeting. And you can join from a phone as well.
