St. Peter’s is a historic Episcopal church, which opened for worship on September 4, 1761 and served as a place of worship for many of the Founding Fathers during the Continental Congresses. It is a National Historic Landmark. It was designed by Scottish architect/builder Robert Smith, who also designed Carpenters’ Hall, the tower of Christ Church, and Nassau Hall at Princeton.

Most of the church remains as it was in the 18th century, including the original high-backed box pews which were designed to retain heat. George and Martha Washington often sat in the box of Mayor Samuel Powel. Servants and enslaved people sat on benches at one end of the church. One was Absalom Jones, who founded the Free African Society with Richard Allen.

Many notable people are interred in the churchyard, including artist Charles Willson Peale and seven Native American chiefs who died of smallpox on a visit to Philadelphia in 1793.

East Falls Village member Judith Beck was the first woman rector of St. Peter’s.

Some people may wish to stay and eat lunch near 2nd & South Sts.
