Climate Smart” Agriculture: Can It Help Africa Feed Itself and the World? A conversation with John Riggan

Mt. Airy resident John Riggan has a perspective of 50-plus years of experience in rural economic development and agriculture in Africa. At the same time that most news stories focus on Africa’s droughts and starving peoples, there are positive initiatives at work such as “climate-smart agriculture.”  However, there is also an accelerating "land grab" by both private investment groups and countries such as China who recognize that Africa offers the last available arable land on earth.

Hear what John has to say about these competing developments.

John Riggan’s work in Africa began with his Peace Corps days in 1965 as a volunteer and rural development specialist in Kenya, and as the Peace Corps’ Country Director in Chad.  Over the years John has worked with the Ford Foundation, the World Bank, African governments, and other organizations. He currently leads Innovare Advisors whose mission is to improve food production, introducing “climate smart” agricultural practices for smallholder farmers.
